Kenka/Ai yotsu - The Grip

The throwing techniques are distinguished between left grip (Hidari kumi kata) and right grip (Migi kumi kata):

If two fighters meet each other the following distinctions will be classified:

Kenka yotsu – against the same sided grip; e.g. Tori right grip, UKE left grip.

Ai yotsu – same sided grip, both partners / fighters occupy the same grip.

Within the competition training a throwing technique should be trained with Migi and Hidari kumi kata. It is also for a good judoka a mandatory practice to train the techniques also as Ai- and as Kenka yotsu with the partner.
